Between 1930 and 1940, John Wayne starred in more than 100 B movies, low-budget, medium-length films broadcast before the main feature in movie theatres. The heroic image was gradually formed, from singing cowboys to fighting farm boys, until it was immortalized in 1939 by John Ford.
