Conductor : Myung-Whun Chung

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France has chosen a special guest tonight: the immense Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich! Conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, this concert features Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 and Romeo and Juliet (Suite).
Completed during a stay in Brittany, Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 remains today an essential work of the Russian repertoire. Martha Argerich is well acquainted with this score imbued with the aesthetics of the 1920s: her performance alongside Claudio Abbado in 1967 is a reference recording. An alchemy that we find again with Myung-Whun Chung tonight.

Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev's major composition in the ballet repertoire, is directly inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy. Composed in 1935 between Paris and Moscow, shortly after Prokofiev's return to the Soviet Union, this work had to wait until 1938 before being premiered. A patience rewarded by a success never denied since then.
