Director: Guillaume Klein

Tonight, under the direction of Barbara Hannigan, we are joined by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. The Canadian artist gives both baton and voice to unfold a program of works by Britten, Haydn and Stravinsky. We begin with excerpts from Metamorphoses for solo oboe. In this 1951 work, Benjamin Britten invokes figures from Greek mythology, plunging us into the world of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Another era and another register with Josheph Haydn's Symphony No. 49. A thousand miles away from the antics of Pan and Dionysus, the oboe here crosses dark lands, all in rupture and tension. Britten then reappears thanks to the Illuminations, another work inspired by literature: here that of Arthur Rimbaud. Barbara Hannigan's voice comes to rest on the notes of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France to give life to the words of the Ardennes poet. The concert closes with a light work: the Concerto in D by Igor Stravinsky. This score for string orchestra is the first one written by the composer after his naturalization as an American. It inspired many ballets, including La Cagede Jérome Robbins. Concert recorded on July 16, 2020 in the Auditorium of Radio France, Paris.
